Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams spoke to Express.co.uk about the Queen’s plans to attend public engagements and whether she would host Christmas. The Queen spent her first overnight stay in hospital in eight years in October and was forced to cancel plans to address world leaders at the COP26 conference in Glasgow.

Instead the 95-year-old monarch addressed the summit in a video message from Windsor castle where she said: “None of us will live forever.”

The Queen was also set to attend the Cenotaph ceremony for Remembrance Day with “firm intentions” which were sadly dashed due to a “back sprain”.

The Palace has removed this week’s planned events from the Queen’s busy agenda for her to rest on the doctor’s advice.

When asked if the Queen would be seen in any public engagements in the near future following her absence from Sunday’s Remembrance service, Richard Fitzwilliams said it was “unclear” when this could be.

He told Express.co.uk: “The Queen knows how much people are looking forward to seeing her attend a public engagement and is aware that her presence adds a very special cachet to any event.”

He added: “She is currently, on the advice of her doctors, doing light duties, including her customary diligent daily attention to the red boxes containing government business.

“It is unclear when she will be able personally to attend events, in the meantime she has proved herself a master of the virtual broadcast.”

Yesterday photos were released of her first engagement since missing the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph on November 14.

The Queen held an audience with the Chief of the Defence Staff in the Oak Room of Windsor Castle.

It was held to mark his stepping down as head of the Armed Forces and principal military adviser to the Secretary of State for Defence.

The royal commentator also spoke about the Queen’s Christmas plans, he told Express.co.uk: “We also look forward to her Christmas message which this year, after the passing of Prince Philip, will assume a special poignancy.

“She recently spent a weekend at Sandringham, where she is expected to host Christmas.
