As the world comes together to start the countdown to Christmas, members of the Royal Family begin to plan their annual December trip to the Queen’s Norfolk estate. Excluding last year, when the pandemic derailed Christmas plans for many Britons, the Queen is usually joined over the holiday-period by other royals at Sandringham House.

In December 2020, when the Government was concerned about a new COVID-19 variant, the Queen, 95, and her late husband Prince Philip were forced to spend Christmas at Windsor Castle.

According to the Royal Family website, the decision to stay at her Berkshire home was the first time the Queen opted to spend Christmas at Windsor since 1987.

However, as invites are being sent out, there are now reports there will be two notable absences.

Page Six, which is connected to the US tabloid The New York Post, reports royal sources have claimed Prince Harry, 37, and his wife Meghan Markle, 40, have decided not to return to the UK for Christmas.

One source said: “There’s a lot that goes into the logistics and the planning of the family Christmas, so of course, staff know that Harry and Meghan are not coming.”

They added: “If they were, they would have communicated it to their family by now.

“But this is Her Majesty’s first Christmas without her husband, so one would have hoped they would want to be with her.”

The report comes after a tough year for Her Majesty.
