The French president, when asked his thoughts on Mr Johnson’s five-point manifesto on how to tackle migration across the Channel, replied: “I am surprised when things are not done seriously.

“We are not whistleblowers.”

This comes after Home Secretary Priti Patel’s invitation to a meeting to discuss how to ease the migration crisis was rescinded by the French government.

It was a response to the letter written by Boris Johnson, in which he urged France to go further in stopping people attempting to cross the Channel.

The meeting which Ms Patel was expecting to attend on Sunday was a gathering of European interior ministers and the European Commission.

A source from the French interior ministry told POLITICO: “We find the open letter from the British prime minister unacceptable.

“Thus, Priti Patel is not invited anymore to the ministers.”

In the letter, Mr Johnson laid our five points of action which the French government could implement to ease the crisis, following the deaths of 27 people in the Channel this week.

It was widely published, including on the Government website, and publicised on Twitter.

Gerald Darmanin, French Interior Minister, said: “Making it public made it even worse.”
