The annual ARIA Awards made a grand return on Wednesday night, with the 2021 ceremony airing live on YouTube from Sydney’s Taronga Zoo.

Yet while the event is usually attended by a number of well-known Australian acts, many of them gave it a miss this year in favour of something a little less glamorous.

Guy Sebastian – a regular staple at the awards after receiving 34 nominations in his career – chose to do a challenging TikTok routine with his wife Jules instead of getting suited and booted for a night on the town.

Zen: Instead of hitting up the ARIA Awards on Wednesday, Guy Sebastian – a regular staple at the annual ceremony – chose to do a TikTok routine with his wife Jules

‘This was meant to be hard yeah?!’ the 40-year-old said, as he completed an energetic dance involving press-ups and shoulder-taps while dressed in gym gear.

Another star who decided to give the event the flick was Jessica Mauboy, who instead posted a sweet tribute message to everyone who was nominated online.

‘Good luck to all this year’s Aria Official nominees!’ she captioned a photo of the logo, yet didn’t reveal where she was spending her time instead.

Meanwhile, Aussie singer Tones and I – who performed live at the 2019 ARIAs with Dance Monkey – posted a picture wrapped up to the nines in a huge Gucci puffer jacket, scarf and baseball cap.

Only a day earlier, the musician revealed she had renewed her Byron Bay busking licence to return to her roots as a street performer.

The 28-year-old showed off the document in an Instagram post on Monday, confirming that she can once again busk in the NSW area as of November 22.

Signer Samantha Jade also gave the event a miss on Wednesday, instead sharing a picture of herself wearing gym gear while posing in her back garden.

She is engaged to Pat Handlin, who is the son of former Sony Music Australia chief executive Denis Handlin.

Something different: Signer Samantha Jade also gave the event a miss on Wednesday, instead sharing this picture of herself wearing gym gear while posing in her back garden

Denis Handlin was stripped of his own ARIA lifetime achievement award earlier this year following a bombshell TV expose.

The ABC’s Four Corners program aired claims from former and current employers alleging Handlin had fostered a culture of ‘intimidation and abuse’ as Sony’s chairman for 37 years.

In a one-line statement issued in October, the Australian Record Industry Association said: ‘The Board of ARIA has today resolved to withdraw the ARIA award made to Denis Handlin in 2014.’

Meanwhile, Jimmy Barnes – who has performed multiple times at the ARIA Awards over the years – took to Instagram to spruik an interview he did on Today Extra at the same time the ceremony aired.

The clip showed him cooking a vegan dish alongside his son David Campbell, captioned: ‘Always a lot of fun when we get together.’

The 2021 ARIA Awards was, of course, unable to take on larger international acts due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

This year, performing acts at the ceremony included Gretta Ray, Budjerah and Genesis Owusu.

The biggest star was Australian rap sensation The Kid Laroi, who performed his hit Stay – his final performance before taking a break from the limelight.
